As I was reading Michael Thompson's post, To Secure or Not to Secure, I was reminded of one of those moments in the world of computers where you are pretty sure you are going to take a sledge hammer to it and then throw it off a 50 story building.
I had been having issues with my laptop saying that there was a conflict with another IP address and then loosing my connection. I could shut down and re-open and have the connection for a while and then I would get booted. I called my computer guru and no one could figure it out. This went on for almost a year--I almost gave up using my lap top at home. It was even more frustrating when I did not have the problem on any other WiFi connection. It was a setting on my laptop at home and it just HAD to be found. I searched and searched but then gave up.
Fast forward a couple months and I was reading an article on how important it is to secure your connection. Begrudgingly, I started reading up on how to do it. Immediately after securing my connection. I figured out what the problem was. My neighbor, who also happens to be my assistant, had a LynkSys as did I----guess what they were both called. . . .LynkSys. Before I secured there was only one LykSys connection showing. After I actually named my connection, there were two.
I can't tell you how darn happy I am that one is figured out because here I sit blogging on my laptop before it is lights out for the night!

Congratulations on figuring it out. I am wondering if my neighbor is stealing mine
I had a similar problem with my desktop and laptop constantly grabbing the same connection. At least, that's what I thought....I wonder if it could have been a neighbor?
I would definately secure your wireless connection. I thought it was just stupid because I live in the country--if someone wanted to get in on my connection they would have to sit in my driveway but know I know it also helps security in general.
Howdy Tami! I'm baack!!!
On those home routers, and the default name is in fact lynksys, and changing yours will help... Vista is more problematic than XP; thank God that Billy Gates is launching a new OS to cover and fill in for the not-well-liked Vista!

Technology is definitely a love-hate relationship. I have issues and invariably find out it is because of something rather simple...my cat stepped on the Hibernate button! I'm glad you got your worked out!
Hey Jeffy!!
Hope you had a great time!!!!
Everyone thank you for the comments. I am such a newbie and it is cool to see that someone is reading.
Blessings!
